Figures use the statewide base rate as a guide. Local city or county taxes may apply — add them in the local rate field. Always confirm the current rate for a purchase.

How to Use the Sales Tax Calculator

Enter the amount, choose your state, and the calculator shows the sales tax and the total instantly. If your city or county adds its own tax, type that into the local rate field to get a precise figure. Switch to reverse mode to start from a tax-included price and find the amount before tax.

How Sales Tax Works in the US

There is no national sales tax in the United States. Instead, each state sets its own rate, and many cities and counties add a local tax on top. That is why the total rate you pay can be higher than the statewide base rate. A few states, such as Oregon and Montana, have no state sales tax at all.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate sales tax on a price?

Multiply the price by the tax rate as a decimal. For example, 8% on $100 is 100 × 0.08 = $8, for a total of $108. The calculator does this for you.

How do I work out the price before tax?

Switch to reverse mode and enter the tax-included total. The tool divides it back out to show the original pre-tax price and the tax portion.

Does this include city and county tax?

It uses the statewide base rate. Add any local city or county rate in the local rate field to include it in the total.

Which states have no sales tax?

Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon have no statewide sales tax, though some local taxes can still apply in a couple of them.
