How to Calculate Tiles Needed

Multiply the room length by the width to get the area in square feet. Divide by the area of one tile (converted from inches to feet, including the grout gap). Round up and add a waste allowance of 10 percent for standard layouts or 15 percent for diagonal patterns. This calculator handles all of that automatically.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much extra tile should I order?

Add 10 percent for a standard grid layout, or 15 percent for diagonal, herringbone, or complex patterns that produce more cut pieces. Always round up to whole boxes.

Does the grout gap affect how many tiles I need?

Yes. Wider grout gaps slightly reduce the number of tiles because each tile effectively covers more floor. This calculator includes the gap in the calculation.
