How college GPA is calculated

Each letter grade converts to grade points on the 4.0 scale (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0, with plus and minus steps of 0.3). Multiply each course’s points by its credit hours, add them up, and divide by total credits. Your cumulative GPA combines these quality points with everything you completed in earlier semesters.

Frequently asked questions

Does an A+ count as more than 4.0? At most US colleges an A+ is capped at 4.0, which is the convention this calculator uses.

Do pass/fail courses count? Usually not — leave them out unless your school assigns them grade points.
